Disclaimers: Yes, I am a weeb. This talks about the Yu-Gi-Oh! Manga, specifically during the Death-T rounds. It is incredibly violent and exposes multiple phobias, so if you are easily triggered I highly suggest skipping those parts of the manga, or… only watch the dubbed anime where this section doesn’t show up… the manga and sub are pretty violent… (also in the picture, mangas are traditionally read right to left and up to down, like a backwards graphic novel).
I have a question; are there any Type 1 Diabetic anime characters?
For this post, I’m going to be focusing on the protagonist of the first anime I ever watched, and also my favorite anime, “Yu-Gi-Oh!”. The protagonist is Yugi Muto, and he had drawn up quite a lot of drama within the fanbase as to whether or not he is a diabetic.
In the manga, there is one scene that leads people into thinking that Yugi is a Type 1 Diabetic. It is during the Death-T duel series, which many easily triggered people skip and go straight to Duelist Kingdom, much like the English dub did.
In the scene, Yugi, Jonouchi (if you watch the English dubbed anime Joey), and Anzu (Téa) escaped the round of T-3, needing to leave Honda (Tristan) behind due to a door closing. Before Yugi moves on to fight Mokuba in T-4, he collapses due to the overwhelming feeling of the Pharaoh (or Yami Yugi). However, Jonouchi says something that has led hundreds of people to the conclusion of Yugi being a diabetic, and what is that line?
“Yugi! Are you okay, Yugi? Do you need your insulin or something?”
After this, Yugi proceeds to talk about how he feels the presence of his Yami, but that still doesn’t leave the conversation at rest.
Many others and I feel that Yugi is not a diabetic because if he was, it would have been brought up more than just once. However, some people are saying that just once is enough, and then go on about how Yugi is their Type 1 Diabetic idol.
As somebody who lives with this illness, I feel that it just isn’t right for people to be making these accusations without other evidence. However, there is still the possibility (I’m brainstorming here bear with me) that Yugi had previously told his friends about his Type 1 Diabetes and is just doing his best to conceal it.
Now, this would be great to bring to the creator, Kazuki Takahashi, but sadly, he drowned a few years ago saving people, may he rest in peace.
So, what is the most realistic opinion? Is Yugi a Type 1 Diabetic, or was it just a fluke in the manga? Or was it made to be a joke?
*If I find any more evidence, arguments, etc… on this topic I will create a second post because I feel that this is an important topic (while Yami Bakura/Akefia is my favorite character, I still think that this is a very cool topic and I am getting very involved in this)*
