How I Feel About Food

Okay, I don’t want to sound mean when I say this, especially to all the foodies out there, but food as a diabetic SUCKS. Especially when you are newly diagnosed.

I mean, when I was first diagnosed, I refused to eat because it meant a shot. I eventually said “Can I have waffles? I’ll take the shot.”, which surprised my parents, but I got to a point where it’s not worth being hungry. When I started eating regularly, sometimes I would have 9 shots a day between basal, food, and corrections.

One of the hardest parts of food is figuring out the carbs. One of the reasons is because your body should react one way when you dose and eat, but it may also react the complete opposite. Why? No two days are alike, just like snowflakes. There are so many components to your blood sugar. Everything affects it.

There are different ratios, and reactions for everyone. For example, I can eat chocolate and get a completely different reaction from my dad, who’s also a diabetic, even though we dose the exact same number of carbs! One of us can go high and one of us can go low.

It is easy to get frustrated, very easy, but just know you are not the only one going through this.
